Double Cleansing Benefits

All the rave lately has been about double cleansing the skin… and why? I’m here to tell you!

What is double cleansing?

Double cleansing is a fundamental practice in skincare routines, essential for effectively eliminating impurities, makeup, and sunscreen residue from the skin. The initial cleanse involves an oil-based cleanser to dissolve these elements, while the subsequent cleanse, often done with a water-based cleanser, guarantees thorough cleansing without compromising the skin's natural oils. This dual-step technique proves especially advantageous for individuals who wear substantial makeup or sunscreen, serving to avert pore congestion and potential breakouts.

The importance of double cleansing, specifically in the evenings, can provide better concentration of ingredients and the benefits of your cleanser to your skin. When we just cleanse once, the cleanser's main focus is everything left sitting on the skin from the day (especially if you were wearing makeup) Therefore, the cleanser is not to its full potential when dealing with your skin. When we double cleanse, we give our cleanser a second chance to work on our skin and focus the ingredients to either be exfoliation or hydrating.

How do I incorporate this?

When incorporating the double cleansing method into your skincare routine, opt for cleansing balms or oils containing nourishing ingredients such as olive oil, coconut oil, or jojoba oil to effectively eliminate makeup, SPF, and impurities from your skin. When selecting a water-based cleanser, go for a gentle formula that caters to your specific skin type. Look for ingredients like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, or ceramides to provide hydration and calm the skin while deeply cleansing it. Foaming cleansers work well for those with oily skin, whereas individuals with dry or sensitive skin may prefer creamy or milky cleansers.

One of my favourites is the Sea Buckthorn Oil by Living Libations. Start by taking a damp cotton pad with a few pumps of oil and gently massage in circular motions around the entire face and neck, once this has been completed thoroughly, follow with your cleanser of choice.

Why will this benefit me?

This two-step process is especially helpful for those with oily or combination skin, as well as individuals who wear heavy makeup or waterproof sunscreen. For oily skin types, double cleansing can help effectively remove the buildup of sebum and impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils. This method can help prevent breakouts and keep pores clear.

On the other hand, those with dry or sensitive skin should proceed with caution when double cleansing. While the first step of using an oil-based cleanser can help remove makeup gently, it is important to choose a gentle water-based cleanser for the second step to avoid over-drying the skin. Consider using a cream or milk cleanser that hydrates while cleansing to prevent irritation and maintain the skin's moisture barrier.
