Why we believe sunscreen is a non negotiable

As we are entering into the summer months, I figured it was the perfect time to educate on one of my favourite products, SUNSCREEN, and why it is so important to have it within your daily routine.

WHAT IS SUNSCREEN?

Sunscreen helps protect the skin from the sun's harmful rays by reducing your overall UV exposure. Sunscreens can reflect, absorb and scatter ultraviolet A and B radiation, and this prevents it from reaching the deeper layers of the skin. The depletion of the ozone layer has increased our risk of sun damage from harmful UV rays, making us more susceptible to skin cancer and sun damage. UV exposure is responsible for 80% of the sun's visible signs of aging, and overexposure to the sun can lead to a loss of elasticity, collagen and increased pigmentation. By using sunscreen, it protects the skin from premature aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, texture and sun spots, and most importantly protects our health from potential skin cancer. 

Sunscreens come as lotions, sprays, gels, moisturizers and sticks. 

MINERAL VS CHEMICAL?

The more scientific names for Mineral and Chemical Filter Sunscreens are “Inorganic Filters” and “Organic Filters”.

Mineral Filter Sunscreens = Inorganic Sunscreen

Chemical Filter Sunscreens = Organic Sunscreen

Although we know that there are lots of reasons why people choose either or, in total transparency neither is better than the other.

How do we choose what is the right sunscreen for us? We believe that the best sunscreen is one which feels comfortable for you on your skin. We understand that a lot of the time people gravitate to avoiding sunscreens due to the smell, texture, white cast or the potential of causing breakouts, but, that's not every sunscreen! As long as it provides safe and effective protection, and is broad spectrum with an SPF 40 or higher, we are on board. The happier you are with your sunscreen, the more consistently you’ll use it.

Sunscreen Ingredients

Now as mentioned, we know that with this topic people have different opinions on why they choose mineral or chemical sunscreen, but both have been tested safe and effective. In fact, many sunscreens have a combination of both. Physical sunscreens typically do cause less skin irritation then chemical, but, it all comes down to formulation and preference. 

How do Mineral and Chemical sunscreens work? Mineral sunscreens block and scatter the rays before they penetrate the skin, and Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays, convert the rays into heat and release them from the body.  

SHOULD I BE USING SUNSCREEN?

YES, of course!

Men, women and children over 6 months of age should use sunscreen every day. This includes people who tan easily and those who don’t — remember, your skin is damaged by sun exposure over your lifetime, whether or not you burn. No matter the amount of melanin that your skin has, this affects all of us, and throughout every season.
